Welcome to the new site

Good News, Everybody!

At last, we have a new home to write together once more. This place isn’t perfect yet, and still a work-in-progress, so let me know here or in the Discord what the pain points are. Some of them can probably be fixed immediately, others will come with time or workarounds.

What are we doing here?

Writing cyberpunk, of course. In a little different setting from the original stories, just for added spice. From the results of feedback, we’ll be writing in a lunar megacity in the early 22nd century, applying cyberpunk to a harder science fiction world. Don’t fret too much that there aren’t hyperdrives, aliens, or force powers here, we’ll have many flavors of humanity to explore and a psionic subplot to be developed, and cybernetics for everyone else.

As for the rockets, they can be cool in different ways than hyperdrive, and slower travel just means an opportunity to tell stories in a new way.

What’s the pitch?

Celeste 7, 2112: A lunar megacity where engineered survival, corporate ambition, and human augmentation shape a stark near-future frontier, drive by strife and defined by choice.

I want to learn more

Great, head on over to the Guidebook, where we’ve started compiling resources for lore and otherwise.

I just want to write

If you’re really savvy, or itching to write, the Dramatis Personae area has some ways to get started. There’s a character bio template available if you start a new topic there, too.

The roleplay section is here. There’s nothing going as of yet, but that can change at the click of a button. You’ve got the touch, you’ve got the power.

How do I…?

Yes, this board is a little different. Let’s go over a few things that already need saying:

  • Switch/link accounts: Unfortunately, not yet. For now, if you want a separate account for each character, you’ll have to log in to each separately. I suggest taking advantage of private browser windows or use Multi-account container tabs on Firefox. This one is top of my priorities to adjust.
    • In the meantime, you can type your writer name account into a field in the Profile page. It’ll auto-link with the account’s username filled in.
  • Registration Woes: You’ll need a separate email for each account, but you can use some tricks for emails like a . or + in Gmail to send them all to the same account. Or use a relay service like Mozilla Relay. DM me in the discord if you’re having issues getting past this.
  • Divs/codes/my favorite post formatting: This is another WIP, and the new board doesn’t have all the codes we’re familiar with. There are buttons above the posting box for the most common, and if you’re missing a favorite code then let me know. (On desktop you can drag the box taller or use the diagonal arrows button to expand it full screen.)
  • Wrong link or X doesn’t work? Post it here or tell me in the discord.

That’s enough now to get started, time to have fun!

Some of you were running into problems where the board would fight coding in posts. This is caused by the Rich Text Mode in the post composer, which is rather aggressive in putting \backslashes in when you try to write code in it directly.

For now, I’ve switched everyone to the Markdown editor for fewer problems with coding. You can switch back with the [M ⇣] A button on the upper-left of the editor buttons.

There’s a preview you can hide or change position for on desktop, with buttons on the upper-right of the composer pop-up. On mobile its a button with the :desktop_computer: icon at the bottom.

Hi all, me again. I updated our Site Rules with one additional to help guide our early writing culture.

#5-1 - Assistive tools are permitted and encouraged as needed, writers should ensure the output of those tools matches their voice and vision (i.e. generative AI is only a tool, and should never be a substitute for your own writing).

This is meant only to foster a community of writers who write for each other, as well as ourselves. Even if you don’t think your writing is very good, or has flaws, the facets that make it uniquely yours are why we’re here to write together. We can always improve our writing skills, but only if we’re the ones actually doing the writing.

There’s no need for me to rant about AI, I’m not here to sit in judgement over anyone else, only to say that it’s a poor substitute for the writing each of us bring ourselves to this place. Let’s not have it here.
